He Just Knocked on The Door

It really has been a great year for WTIT. As you will see in the next post, four of the Original 5 WTIT DJs had a reunion at Gypsy's home. Gyps has health issues so it was the best place to meet. Bouncing Billy hadn't seen him in nearly 40 years and it was over 20 for both Johnnie and Bud. That left Galloping Gary as the only one of the five that Billy hadn't seen in 40 years either. The last tape that Gary appeared on was "The 15th Anniversary Show" on Tape 137 in 1982. On Friday night July 25, 2014 we were getting together for that month's recording. Billy, Bud & Johnnie were in Bud's den waiting for Rock when there was a knock on the door. We were flabbergasted Galloping Gary was there. He simply said, "We're recording tonight, right?" He was in town visiting his dad and saw that we were record from our WTIT Facebook page. So in a bizarre turn of events we spent a night with 4 of the Original 5 two months in a row. The last time the five of us were together was 1973. For that matter, having four of us together hadn't happened since 1973 either. Here are the photos of that night. In the first shot standing are Bouncing Billy & Johnnie Walker. Seated are Galloping Gary, Bud Weiser and Rock Rolling.

The Night that Gypsy Reappeared

from left: Bud, Gypsy, Johnnie & Billy

This was something even a few years ago we'd thought we'd never see. The original five DJs at WTIT were Bud, Johnnie (Who have recorded together for over 45 years) Gary, Billy & Gypsy. Gary moved to DC and Gyps went off to the Navy. Last fall, Bud contacted Billy that led not only to a great time, but his return to WTIT. At Billy's urging, we had to visit Gyps, who was a career caddie on the PGA tour, has since retired and moved back to town. Last night, for the first time since 1973 we all got together. We invited Gary, but he was at a wedding in Colorado. Gyps was the most gracious host. He made delicious food and his company was even better. We took a bunch of selfies, and thanks to Bud's wife Kathy (a professional photographer) to mix a couplke together for this result. So since the first time since the early 70s, here is (from left) Bud, Gypsy, Johnnie & Billy!

Studio 33 1/3 in its third year ushered in WTIT 48th year of Tape Radio. Missing was Midnight, who missed the invite. He'll be back for our next session in March. We did a spoof of Superbowl 48 reporting. Ironically, our first recording was a couple of weeks after Superbowl 1.

Bud Weiser & Bouncing Billy Meet for Drinks 2013

This is one of the best reunions in quite a while. Bouncing Billy (left) & Bud Weiser recorded the first ever WTIT show in 1967. Until 1976 they along with Galloping Gary & Johnnie Walker were the essence of WTIT. Billy would return only once more, in 1985 for the "relaunch" of what we consider the current era of WTIT. With Johnnie Walker, Billy & Bud taught The Cosmic Commando what WTIT was all about. That night in 1985 was the last time Billy & Bud were together...until this week. Picture here at a TGI Fridays, they spent the night drinking and talking of all those memories.

First Recording Session of 2013

When it's been a while since sessions, it's great to sit around the large circular studio table and record again. We did our first spot spoof of the year, "Personal Pocket Hose (for Her)". Johnnie Walker (left) and Bud Weiser recorded tapes 575 & 576.

The Formal 45th Anniversary Shots (at the wedding)

We've done this pose since our first photo shoot in 1970. It's "Rubber Soul". We did it again for our 20th and 25th Anniversaries, and here again on our 45th. From left: The Cosmic Commando (in the 20th also), Galloping Gary (in the original and now here), Rock Rolling (In the 20th & 25th), Bud Weiser (in all), Johnnie Walker (in all) and The Midnight Plowboy (In the 25th and now here.
We did our first Abbey Road shot in 1970. We crossed Soby Drive, where our first studio was located. Here we are again, this time on Susan Circle (home of our current studio) but through the magic of photo shop, our photographer placed us on the real Abbey Road. From right: the first three DJs appeared in this order in the original shot. Bud Weiser followed by Galloping Gary and Johnnie Walker. Cos is next, followed by Rock & Midnight.

Here it is again, but while the photo at the top of the this post might change at some point, here's the original color photo on 20 October 2012. Shot in our latest studio, WTIT Studio 33 1/3. Standing Johnnie Walker and Bud Weiser. Seated from left: Rock ,Cos, Gary &Midnight .

WTIT Looks at The Olympics

When WTIT Tape Radio began, the guys recorded four or five times a week. We were in high school with time on our hands. Even when we had parties or dates, we'd interview our girlfriends. In fact, one time our girlfriends recorded a show totally without us. Bud's appeared as Sally Weiser, Johnnie's was Carol Walker, Gary's was Jill Townsend and Gypsie's was Sue Grillo. All our tapes still exist. We thought when we went off to college that we'd "outgrow" it. We did our first "Last Tape Show" in August of 1969.

As soon as we had a semester breaks, we were back at it. We'd record four days a week before we headed back. After college, we knew we'd never stop. Bud got married and the WTIT Studio moved for the first time. Recording became less regular, but still happened.

By 1985, we were back to weekly. First at The Braeburn Studio during Bud's first marriage, and through the end of his second marriage at The Turnbull Studio. Since then, it's a three or four times a year adventure. Bud (for reasons only he could explain) is getting married again. Kathy and Bud bought a home and Studio 33 1/3 was born. Rock Rolling, Johnnie Walker and Bud Weiser christened the studio earlier this year. Bud is on vacation and Johnnie is in town visiting. These picks are from last night's session that included WTIT Earwitness News report on the Olympics. Both decided women's beach volleyball is their favorite. They do not even understand the scoring. They know that there's a net involved and a ball. The rest is about watching these fine female athletes compete. Their favorite team? The blonde one. Here's the photos from last night. we will post the bit, later on.
We also still have our vinyl.
