Michael J. Returns to the WTIT Studio

Michael J. and Bud
August 5, 2010

While Mike only appeared as a WTIT DJ on a few tapes, most notably our 100th Tape Show in 1973, he was the "voice of WTIT" exclusively from 1972 until 1991. All show openers, program aids, promos and the like were voiced by Mike. Mike was the voice of the C-Span networks for their first ten years. He still is a much sought after announcer and news person. When Damon Scott took over in 1991, we still used Mike's voice to introduce our comedy shows. It just never seemed right without him. Even though Damon recorded the same opener, it was never used.

The Gatewood Studio 2004 to 2011

We moved into The Gatewood Studio in September of 2004. The WTIT Blog originated here in 2006. In 2006, the studio would have it's first Tape Radio show. That night included Johnnie Walker, Rock Rolling and Bud Weiser. The last show was recorded there in November 2011 around the time of Bud's 60th birthday bash. Harvey Wallbanger joined Bud in what turned out to be the Gatewood Studio's swan song. In January 2012, Bud and Kathy bought a house in the same town about five miles away. WTIT presently records in what is called WTIT Studio 33 1/3.

WTIT DJ Staff Pic 2008

Bud Weiser and Harvey Wallbanger
By 2008, WTIT's main comedy focus had become WTIT Tape Radio: The Blog. Harvey contributed with Bud as both a sounding board and a "foil" during those WTIT: The Blog years. (Update 2014: since then...fortunately, we're back recording. In the last year or so, Billy (after 28 years), Greg (after 6 years), Harvey (after 16 years) Midnight (after 17 years) & Galloping Gary (after 32 years) have returned to record at WTIT Studio 33 1/3.)  The 2008 DJ photo from creation through execution was completely Harvey's. Harvey is an artist who is equally comfortable with photography as he is with oil painting. Against our initial wishes, Harvey finally connected our call letters to female anatomy in the 2008 DJ pic from 2008. Hey, we were 15 in 1967. Truly the letters were inspired more from WTIC (the top, overall station) & WDRC (our favorite rock station) the Big D. So we became WTIT, the Big T. Bud and Bouncing Billy recorded our first show. (And as we edit this post, & most recently recorded our most recent.) When Bud first saw this he said, "We've manage to escape these letters for over 40 years, why would you do this? Harvey smirked at Bud and stated, "Because I can." Bud started laughing and Harvey continued, "You, and now me, have avoided it all this time. Just this time: let's embrace it, just once." Bud smiled. We're not marketing anything. We've got some exposure on Facebook with 103 fans, a tweeter (@wtit) account, and big blog exposure on Sunday's most popular (nearly 500 members) Meme/Survey feature. We do should have a book on the way and more surprises.

Harvey Wallbanger 2008

A self portrait of sorts. Harvey joined WTIT in 1993.
He is the only other WTIT DJ who has written for
WTIT: The Blog. He authors the feature
Harvey's Got a Match.

WTIT Official DJ Staff Pic: 2007

From the 40th Anniversary Show. Left to Right: Johnnie Walker, Gregarious Greg, Rock Rolling, Bud Weiser. The Midnight Plowboy phoned in with congratulations, but he had to work that evening. The Show was recorded August 17, 2007.

Waiting on a Friend

From left: Johnnie Walker, Greg Esthus and Rock Rolling ponder if Bud will set the camera correctly and join them in the group shot. Obviously here, he did not.

The WTIT 40th Anniversary Show: 2007

The Show was recorded on August 17, 2007. The reason this version of the photo has our names on it is that this shot was placed in the sidebar of WTIT: The Blog as we celebrated our 4oth Anniversary of Tape Radio in 2007.

Gregarious Greg 2007

At the 40th Anniversary Show. Greg began at WTIT in 1973 and took Killer Joe's place in 1974. Greg would record regularly from 1974 to 1976. Other than Johnnie Walker and Bud Weiser, Gregarious Greg is the only WTIT DJ to attend: The 10th Year Party; The 15th Anniversary Show; The 20th Anniversary Show; The 30th Anniversary Show and of course, here at the 40th.

Laughing on the 40th Anniversary Tape

Well, the headline is not entirely true. We're laughing, it is our 40th, but we stop using tape in 1999. Left to Right: Jumping Johnnie Walker, Gregarious Greg Esthus and Bud Weiser.

Nice Seein' You
